Coming Up in April, May and June

April 13th

St John the Baptist, Barnby – Dr Ian Hinton
An archaeological analysis of a standing building

Our speaker for our April meeting will be Dr Ian Hinton. Ian is a landscape historian whose PhD thesis was about churches and their location and alignment, for which he surveyed almost 2000 over 8 years. His thesis was published as a BAR Volume and has had articles published in The Antiquaries Journal, Church Archaeology and British Archaeology. He is retired and is now Chairman of the Norfolk Historic Buildings Group and is editor of their Newsletter and Journals.

For his talk, Ian will guide us through his survey of St Johns’s Church, Barnby, including reconstructions at each stage of its development. There will also be an opportunity to pop next door to St Peter’s Church for a hands-on walk around the interior and exterior.

We’re meeting at Needham Village Hall, High Road, Needham, IP20 9LB on Saturday April 13th at 2.00pm. All welcome, members £2.00, non members £3.00. The usual refreshments will be available.

May 11th

Hailstones & Highwaymen: Experiences of Road Travel in Georgian England
Dr James Albone

For our meeting on May 11th we welcome James Albone. James is Planning Archaeologist for Norfolk County Council with a special interest in the history and use of roads including the landscape context of Roman roads, experiences of English road travel in the long eighteenth century, the archaeology and architecture of motoring and the Great North Road.

We haven’t yet looked much if at all at Georgian England so far, so this will be another first. James will be telling us about travel in England throughout the Georgian period, and the dangers and hardships involved in getting from here to there and back again.

We’re meeting at Needham Village Hall, High Road, Needham, IP20 9LB on Saturday May 11th at 2.00pm. All welcome, members £2.00, non members £3.00. The usual refreshments will be available.

I would love to come on the tour of Suffolk churches on June 15th but don’t seem able to register with eventbrite. Is there still room?
