February meeting – Ken Hamilton on the Wreck of the Rooswijk

On February 16th we welcome back Ken Hamilton to talk to us about something we haven’t touched on before, underwater archaeology, and specifically the archaeology of the wreck of the Rooswijk. The Rooswijk was a Dutch East India Company merchant ship which sank on the Goodwin Sands of the coast of Kent in 1740, outbound for Batavia in the Dutch East Indies. During the summers of 2016-2018 teams of Dutch and British marine archaeologists have been excavating the wreck under the supervision of Historic England. There’s more about the excavation on Historic England’s website.

We’ll be meeting at 2.00pm on February 16th at Needham Village Hall, High Road, Needham, IP20 9LB. Members £2.00, non-members £3.00. The usual refreshments will be available, we’re still trying to find a nautically themed biscuit. All welcome.
